50 Cal vs Non-Newtonian fluid

Non-Newtonian fluids are fluids that doesn't have the typical viscosity property of a fluid we know in general sense. When it has force, pressure, or heat applied it, it hardens up. as viscosity doesn't follow the Newton's law of viscosity.

But even if the non-Newtonian fluid hardens up, energy from .50 BMG probably is enough to overcome changes in the fluid.

SIG announce voluntary recall

Recoil magazine posted that SIG SAUER is announcing a voluntary recall regarding P320 issue.

http://www.recoilweb.com/sig-sauer-issues-voluntary-upgrade-for-p320-129031.html

The details will be available on sigsauer.com on Monday August 14.

Update: Soldier Systems Daily covered the session held by SIG recently.
http://soldiersystems.net/2017/08/08/sig-sauer-acknowledges-p320-trigger-issues-with-30deg-drop-m17-mhs-unaffected-announces-voluntary-p320-upgrade/

SIG P320 drop controversy

Around July 31st, the internet started to notice that Dallas Police Department issued a "do not use"(paraphrasing) notice to its officers who carries SIG P320 as their service pistol. Dallas PD issued SIG P226, but officers who wants can buy SIG P320 with their own money can carry it.

It was noted by several forums and soon the word spread. It was unclear what lead to the decision, but on August 4, SIG Sauer realesed a statement regarding the issue.

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2017/08/04/official-statement-sig-sauer-reaffirms-safety-p-320-pistol/

In short, SIG SAUER states that P320 passed all drop tests, and have not heard any drop-related P320 incident in US.

The language SIG SAUER used in users manual which seemed to allude to the gun firing when dropped is more of legal writing than anything else. But coupled with some information and the way the manual was written, it probably gave someone at Dallas PD a pause, then decided that it would be better to be safe than sorry.

With SIG SAUER's statement it seemed to settle down, with Dallas PD lifting the suspension, until Omaha Outdoors posted this video featuring Andrew Tuohy, famous for calling out FireClean as evgetable oil based.

If the gun was dropped on its back of slide, the gun will fire. In the video, Tuohy identified one of possible reason, a heavier trigger.

It is unclear what SIG SAUER will do at this point. But with serious problem of this nature, SIG has to come up with a way to fix the issue instead of saying it passed industry tests. Guns do get dropped - whether it is fighting with an attackeror banging it on something.

What will this do to the MHS selection? It will be hard to tell. GAO said the selection did not violate the rules set up, but the drop test could have been in the second phase. Army can go ahead and just continue with the process, or they can fix it like how they dealt with M9's slide cracking problem. However, at this point a competitor like Glock can argue that it needs to be given a fair chance for the second stage since SIG got to modify its pistol.

This situation is still on going and will be interesting how it will change.

It's buyer's market

In a recent study, estimated gun sales of July 2017 went down by 26% compared to the previous year. However the year 2016 was more of abnormality since many were worried about the Presidential election and was buying to hedge the chance that Clinton would have won.

http://www.guns.com/2017/08/04/july-estimated-gun-sales-plummet-26-percent/

Now that the chance of restrictive firearms law is lessened, the sales declined. In response, manufacturers are also giving out rebates and slashing prices. Manufacturers probably were worried about the election and had plans or increased manufacturing capacities. That created a lot more supply, and with less demand, the price fell.

Recently, Sturm, Ruger announced that it's second quarter sales dropped 22%.

http://www.guns.com/2017/08/04/sturm-ruger-sales-down-22-percent-in-second-quarter/

Winchester Ammunition also had similar situation where their sales dipped 15% in the second quarter.

http://www.guns.com/2017/08/02/olin-ceo-the-worst-is-over-for-winchesters-slumping-ammo-sales/

This means that if you are a buyer who has been looking in to buying a new gun, the time is right. It doesn't mean that the price will rise back up to pre-election level soon, but rather, the manufacturers will adjust their output level so it won't be this low.

Ammunition prices will be less likely to drop now with so many guns sold as well as impending ban on internet ammunition sales in California driving purchases up. Gun sales probably will not recover as fast as the ammunition sales, but the time is now if you want some good deals.
