Bullet-proof origami ballistic shield
Bringham Young University's engineers came up with this deployable ballistic shield that is lighter and more space-efficient. Currently, it is rated for pistol rounds Level IIa. It will be interesting if they can increase the protection level, as shields ke this may have their use in certain situations.

USMC looks to acquire more M27 IAR
US Marines put out a RFI(Request For Information) for M27 IAR. USMC has been experimenting with M27 last year and this move seems to indicate having more of M27 available for infantry troops. It will not be enough for every single infantry, but could be replacing M249 or work as a DMR.
The RFI doesn't say H&K M27, but the requirement is that of the gun. Should any of other manufacturers meet the requirement, this could go in to an interesting direction.
You can read more from SSD
