FBI looking for a new pistol

On soliciation dated Oct 7, 2015, FBI noted that they are looking for a new pistol chambered in 9mm. Compact size should have barrel length of 3.75" to 4.25, full-size from 4.26" to 5.2"

Some of requirements are,

  • Striker fired pistol with constant trigger weight from the first to last shot fired. Trigger pull must be between 4.5 to 6 lbs
  • no decockers
  • must be able to use magazine from full size in compact version
  • should carry 16 or more rounds for full-size, 14 or more for compact. mechanism should be same
  • grip must have replacable panels to adjust for different hand sizes
  • no finger grooves
  • magazine should have holes to check how many rounds are in there, at least one hole for 5 rounds. Followers preferably has high visibility colors.
  • controls(slide lock, magazine release) must be ambidextrous and bea easily accesible from either sides. Magazine release has to be activated by lateral pressure.
  • no external, grip safety
  • front and rear night sights, high visibility sight such as Trijicon HD preferred

The contract is minimum $25 million to $85 million over 10 years. It also includes Simunition pistol, training pistol, and parts.

The discussion seems to speculate that this is a way FBI is nudging Glock to update their offering. A lot of specifications can be met by various manufacturers if they change a few things. Currenty, out of commercially available guns, SIG Sauer P320 seems to be a contender.

CZ 805 gets update - CZ 806 Bren 2

Czech website Altair.com reported that CZ(Česká Zbrojovka) made improvements to the CZ 805 rifle. 2 in Bren 2 shows that it is a carbine. 1 is for standard rifle, 3 is for DMR version.

According to translations from The Firearm Blog, the rifle was tested by the Czech soldiers in Afghanistan. Problems identified were,

  • uncomfortable cheek pad,
  • bad grip and safety lever design
  • no bolt lock to the rear after the last round
  • difficult to clean

Some of changes made were,

  • magazine well that will take AR magazines instead of proprietary magazines(that was interchangeable with G36). It is also now a one-piece lower instead of 805's two piece(trigger group and magazine well)
  • ambidextrous magazine release
  • slimmer profile, less weight(shaved 0.5kg off)
  • charging handle doesn't move when fired
  • easier ways to clean
  • bolt locking back on the last round
  • three choices for amount of gas to operate the guide rod from the previous two
  • better buttstock with cheek weld
  • pistol grip has changable backstrap
  • no more 2-round burst
  • bolt release on the left hand side like M16 and another one in front of trigger

Most of the improvements were also readily noticeable when GNB got its first look at the rifle, as well as other people.

Geissele unveiled its laterst product. This was developed by a request from a DoD customer.

Geissele rep posted some more info on AR15.com

At launch in Jan we plan to have 3 different types of 30mm mounts, 4 types of 34mm, black anodize and the DDC shown in the picture, 0 MOA, 20 MOA versions and mounts for the Aimpoint T1/T2, Trijicon MRO and others.

There are also two aluminum alloys available. 7055 Aluminum which is a stronger 7075 and also Alcoa's 2099 advanced Lithium/Aluminum alloy which is as strong as 7075 but lighter, stiffer and more corrosion resistant. 2099 is used in highly loaded airframes by Boeing and Airbus and is considered the cutting edge of aluminum alloy development.

Mount cost is around $350

IDPA to change scoring

IDPA mentioned in their Tactical Brief on Sept. 29, 2015 that,

"Last week at the World Championship awards banquet, I announced that the IDPA Board of Directors has elected to increase the Point Down penalty from a half second to 1 second. The BoD is comprised of two MA shooters (both Founders of the sport) and one EX with a combined total of more than 57 years of IDPA experience. This decision was made to keep the sport aligned with the founder's intent of valuing accuracy over speed. As concealed carry holders, which many of our members are, we are responsible for every round that leaves our gun, and IDPA needs to reflect that in our practices. I met with some of the Area Coordinators recently to share this information and the feedback received from them was very positive. There is no hard timetable for this change. Classification scores and other areas will need to reflect the change, and we are already working with some of our scoring vendors on this change. More information will be available as the work progresses and we will make updates on this via the Tactical Journal and Tactical Brief."

So instead of multiplying points down with 0.5, now it will be recorded as just points down. If you have 4 points down, it would be 2 added to the time, but with this change it will be 4.

This is not exactly something new. During the creation of IDPA, there were discussions about whether penalty should be 0.x or 1. The compromise was 0.5 we have now.

There has been quite a few opinions about the proposed penalty change. Some saw this as attempt to close the gap between top shooters and bottom levels, others saw this as attempt to keep USPSA out, or trying to help old shooters. Or maybe just a focus on accuracy as the statement says.
