Feinstein's dream
Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) has her proposal on her website
Bans the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacturing of:
--120 specifically-named firearms
--Certain other semiautomatic rifles, handguns, shotguns that can accept a detachable magazine and have one military characteristic
--Semiautomatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can accept more than 10 rounds
Strengthens the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and various state bans by:
--Moving from a 2-characteristic test to a 1-characteristic test
--Eliminating the easy-to-remove bayonet mounts and flash suppressors from the characteristics test
--Banning firearms with “thumbhole stocks” and “bullet buttons” to address attempts to “work around” prior bans
--Bans large-capacity ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than 10 rounds.
Protects legitimate hunters and the rights of existing gun owners by:
--Grandfathering weapons legally possessed on the date of enactment
--Exempting over 900 specifically-named weapons used for hunting or sporting purposes and
--Exempting antique, manually-operated, and permanently disabled weapons
Requires that grandfathered weapons be registered under the National Firearms Act, to include:
--Background check of owner and any transferee;
--Type and serial number of the firearm;
--Positive identification, including photograph and fingerprint;
--Certification from local law enforcement of identity and that possession would not violate State or local law; and
--Dedicated funding for ATF to implement registration
It's a combination of CA-like law(list of all names) and making all semi-auto rifles registered as NFA item. Seems like these are two things that will not work, as discussed in my earlier post.

GNB: What could happen
After the senseless murder in Newtown, CT, there has been calls for another Assault Weapon Ban. Opponents of the Second amendment believe banning all semi-auto rifles would somehow prevent similar tragedies. Such argument falls flat when you look at FBI data(link)
Out of instruments used, rifles are accounted for 3% of the murder, half of hands, fists, and etc. Even if we (mistakenly) assume that all of unknown types are rifles, it is 16% at the most. This runs contrary to what AWB supporters are arguing about. Banning semi-auto rifles is not going to accomplish what they claim to do.
However, such reasoning is not really going to work. There are quite a few times when politics and logic don't go hand-in-hand. That has driven sales of AR rifles and other 'evil looking' semi-auto rifles to an unprecedented level.
So what could happen from this point on?

GNB: So how much did you train this year?
The year is coming to an end and along with festivities the inevitable question is asked - What did you buy?
One of things I notice is that we focus on tangible objects more than having experiences. It is a lot easier to see an object, but what good is the object if you don't have an experience to go with it?
There are plenty of people who buy guns. Gun sales has been steadily increasing for last several years, and there are more people who head out to the range to fire the new purchase.
But I still haven't seen the question of 'How much did you train?' asked often.

GNB: Magazine malfunctions
You get to see quite a few things when you are in a training class often enough. Firearms malfunctioning is one of them, but you can also witness magazines malfunctioning.
Here is a SIG P226 magazine that fell to the ground. As you can see, the first round nose dived in to the magazine. This is not an isolated incident. In some extreme cases, the first round will actually turn around and bullet will end up facing back of the magazine. This happens since the magazine spring does not hold up the remaining ammunitions, and compress when hitting the ground, making enough gap for the top ammunition to tumble.
Another problem witnessed is follower not pushing up the ammunition. Inside the M&P magazine, there are two ammunitions that refused to go up. This is something I have not heard happening but here it is.
Both incidents are not frequent occurences, but it does happen from time to time. This is something that is not going to happen on a square range where dropping a magazine doesn't happen that often.
It doesn't take away from the fact that both SIG P226 and S&W M&P are overall great guns. There are no guns that are reliable 100% of times. It seems like the best preparation is to expect such malfunctions to occur and be ready to deal with it.
